Peyote, called Lophophora williamsii in Latin, is a small spineless cactus.
Its native region extends from the US south western states of Texas and New Mexico through to central Mexico.
The cactus flowers at around 3-5 years(longer in the wild) and produces nice small pink flowers.
The seeds are small and black. They require warm and humid conditions to germinate. This, along with over harvesting of
mature plants in the wild and slow growth - are the main reasons this desert plant is becoming rare in its natural habitat.
Numbers are reducing due to harvesting for commercial purposes. All Lophophora species grow extremely slow.
Human cultivated specimens grow considerably faster. Peyote is considered to be in danger of extinction in the wild.
Peyote contains a large spectrum of phenethylamine alkaloids, the principal of which is mescaline.
The mescaline content of Lophophora williamsii is about 0.4% fresh and 3-6% dried.
The effective dose for mescaline is about 300 to 500 mg (equates to roughly 5 grams of dried peyote) and the effects last about 10 to 12 hours.
Peyote is a spiritual drug. At times the effects are accompanied by visual or auditory effects.
It also contains;
hordenine, n-methylmescaline,
lophophorine, tyramine, o-methylanhalonidine,
n-acetylmescaline, pellotine and anhalamine.
History of use.
The Native American deification(One that embodies the qualities of a god) of Peyote is estimated to be around 10,000 years old.
7000 year old (Radio Carbon Dated) Peyote cactus buttons have even been uncovered in Shumla Cave in southern Texas, USA.
The local Huichol Indians who live in North Western Mexico still use peyote sacramentally, they have been doing so since around 200 A.D.
The Huichols follow traditional rules when they go on their pilgrimage to collect the sacred Peyote.
The journey to collect the sacred plants
is nearly 400 kilometers each way, by foot, through desert.
They eat it raw. To honor the precedent set by their elders.
The usual dose for mescaline is about 300 to 500 mg. That equates to roughly 5g of dried peyote.
The effects last about 10 to 12 hours.
Grow your own. Peyote is quite easy to grow from seed(seeds should sprout within two weeks).
If you get your seedlings through the first year, your project will be problem free.
Optimum conditions would be;
Slightly moist fine sand and soil mix(ph 7.5 / 8).
Indirect natural light.
For success you must avoid;
Direct strong sunlight(they will start to turn pink).
Too much fertilizer(seaweed fertilizer is great, but dilute to 50% strength).
Too much water(over watering will kill mature peyote as well).
Cold weather(80 deg F is perfect).
When your seedlings are 1 year old they will be large enough to transfer into individual pots. A small pot (5 cm) will do fine.
In the wild, peyote takes 4 or 5 years years to reach 1-2cm.
Luckily with optimum conditions the earliest one may expect harvestable size peyote buttons (6cm+ diameter) from seed is
about five years..
Top Tips
Dont water mature peyote(1 year +) from end of September/October. Rot is their biggest killer.
Slugs love peyote. I had 50 x 4cm peyote damaged by slugs in 1 week last year.
Make your greenhouse secure! Lowlifes will steal your peyote.
Remember peyote is a doorway to the spirit world, not a party drug.
Repot your peyote in spring before you commence watering.
Sterilize your soil(as simple as putting in oven) before repotting or sowing seeds.
